The Basement: serial killer thriller with a breathtaking twist A serial killer is torturing and killing women in New York. And two detectives are sure that a writer is behind the murders. But as they close in on their suspect, a woman is being held captive in a basement somewhere in the city. Can they find the killer before the latest victim is killed? The basement is a fast-paced novella of 40,000 words, about 150 pages, with a shocking twist in the tail. (Be warned, there are some quite violent scenes and quite a high sexual content, all necessary for the plot. If you have any reservations at all please download the sample first, it isn't everyone's cup of tea.) FIVE STARS from Vine Voice and Top 500 Reviewer Shaun Horrigan of London, who said: "This is another short, sharp shocker of a read from Stephen Leather. It is a longish short story/novella and is readable in about three hours or so. Stephen Leather really does have the ability to take you straight into a story and keep you there until you turn the end. "With only a handful of characters in total, the three main characters are surprisingly well developed in the short time available. The shorter format works very well with this story as the intensity and suspense are very nicely maintained throughout which is not always possible in a longer book. The little twist at the end was nicely done and I must admit that I didn't see it coming. As with every other Stephen Leather book I have read on the Kindle, presentation is pretty much faultless. Overall: 5 stars - short, focused and definitely high on the shock value." Stephen Leather is one of the UK's most successful thriller writers. He was a journalist for more than ten years on newspapers such as The Times, the Daily Mail and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. Before that, he was employed as a biochemist for ICI, shovelled limestone in a quarry, worked as a baker, a petrol pump attendant, a barman, and worked for the Inland Revenue. He began writing full time in 1992. His bestsellers have been translated into more than ten languages. He has also written for television shows such as London's Burning, The Knock and the BBC's Murder in Mind series. The Stretch and The Bombmaker were filmed by Sky One. (9) DSC 1363 When I cut the perimeter out, the floor was cut along two walls parallel to the joists, meaning there was no support under the edge of the new subfloor, and stepping there caused it to deflect dangerously. These braces were added to prevent that. The three in this picture were the first to go up, later augmented by two more so they're installed a little over a foot apart. For a frame of reference, the duct shown at the right of the photo ends at the vent seen in the back of the bathroom, so the wall at the bottom of this photo is the wall along which the vent lies upstairs. 20080330 - Before tubing move Tubing incorrectly installed :( We wasted another weekend fixing this problem. We had to move all the heat tubing in the basement and the attic room. Upset is not a strong enough word right now.
